Steps
- 1Get an official Japanese translation of your license (embassy/consulate, JAF, or an authorised body).
- 2Book an appointment and submit documents at your prefectural license center for the eligibility check.
- 3Take the knowledge and driving-skills confirmation (some countries are exempt); on passing, your Japanese license is issued.
What to bring
- Valid foreign driver's license (and old ones, if any)
- Official Japanese translation of the license
- Passport(s) showing 3+ months' stay in the issuing country after the license was issued
- Residence record (juminhyo) showing your registered domicile
- Photo (3cm x 2.4cm)
